ilmasil® - fused quartz is produced using a unique plasma-based fusion process that produces both clear and opaque hollow cylinders (billets) in a single heating step. At the start of the process, high purity quartz sand is fed into a rotating furnace mold, with centrifugal force used to achieve dimensional control. During the fusion process, a high purity gas atmosphere is maintained in the mold while a plasma arc is sparked between the two electrodes. At temperatures greater than 2000°C, the energy of the plasma arc transforms the crystalline quartz sand into fused quartz.
Following the fusion process, the cylinders are annealed to remove internal stress. The outer sinter layer is also removed, and a final grinding step achieves precise dimensional requirements.
QSIL´s hollow cylinders are the perfect base material for the manufacture of precise symmetric circular products, such as rings and flanges. Our unique fusion process yields high flexibility in both geometries and material properties, thus meeting our customers diverse specifications.
